Walker Evans-42nd Street Hannah J Winters
When I looked at this photo, I saw that the light looked natural, soft, and the light is coming from the West. The shadows create strong contrasts. I observed the value, and there is a range of tones going from light to dark. The lightest part of the photograph is the reflection off of the car and the darkest part was the shadow on the wall. Some parts of the image were clearly in focus, while others wer not. The lady is in focus, but the cars are not. I do believe that overlapping objects do not create a sense of space. There is not much space in here though. There are a lot of shapes in here. For example, the car body is in the shape of a rectangle. The car wheels are in the shape of a circle, etc. There are both positive and negative shapes in here. There are also a variety of lines. The only colors in here are black and white. The surface of the photograph doesn't have a lot of texture to it. The vantage point or angle that the photo was taken in looks straight on to me. If it was fram a different angle, the lady would not be the main focus, and the man walking doen the stairs would. It is balanced quite evenly. The top has more to it than the bottom. He used a film camera to take this, since digital's weren't invented till long after the 1940's. I think the work is about what people wore back then, and what it was like back then. Words cannot describe this photo, or at least I can't. ![]() Hue Series! ![]() Color Series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() |
